Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about LegalQuants, membership, and how we operate.

What is a Legal Quant? How is it different from a Legal Engineer?

A legal quant is not a lawyer aspiring to be a software engineer. If you judge them by software engineering standards, you’ll miss the point entirely.

The real differentiator is systems thinking. A legal engineer is given a defined input and output and left to figure out what happens in between. A legal quant is given an input and reimagines what the output looks like.

Legal quants blur the same line between lawyer and builder. It’s not about coding as identity. It’s about control — the difference between using a tool and expanding the frontier of what’s possible.

Today that might mean vibe-coding a contract review tool. Tomorrow it might mean designing agentic workflows or building plugins that reshape how an entire practice area operates. The skill that endures is the ability to anticipate clients’ needs and see what AI makes newly possible — then build it.

In practice, that looks like this: an institutional investor signs 1,000 side letters across 1,000 funds. Most contain “on demand” rights — notification, transparency, audit — that are never exercised. Money left on the table. A legal quant builds a tool that surfaces those unexercised rights, automatically requests them, and turns dormant contract clauses into live intelligence. Not productivity gains. Instant alpha.

Only a small number of lawyers will ever get to this frontier, but they’ll reshape the profession.

Should I apply?

If you see yourself in the description above, we’d love to hear from you. We thought we were alone before we found each other. That moment of realising there are others like you — tinkering on evenings and weekends, building things no one asked for, seeing possibilities that colleagues don’t — was something we’ve fought hard to preserve.

LQ gives you a safe environment to share knowledge, show your builds, exchange ideas, and stay at the frontier of AI as it evolves. The community includes people at different stages of the journey — from those just starting with no-code automations to those shipping production tools used by hundreds of lawyers. What unites everyone is the drive to build rather than wait.

What is the batch cohort?

All eligible participants are listed as new joiners on our website. Cohort status (LQ000, LQ001, etc.) is earned through participation in community events like hackathons, where members collaborate, ship, and demonstrate what legal quants can do collectively.

We currently prioritise open-source and open-access projects because that’s how we started. Jamie, Artur, Anson, and many of the OGs gained their credibility by vibe-coding in the open and sharing everything. Open-sourcing is how you earn trust in this community.

We are cautious about featuring commercial projects at this stage — we don’t want to become a project directory. LegalQuants is first and foremost an intelligence network biased towards action: building, shipping, and sharing what we learn.

Can I join the community without exposing myself?

Yes. We understand that not everyone is free to showcase projects publicly — firm policies, personal preference, or simply not wanting the attention. Stealth mode is available. You can pick an alias and still share your work, contribute to discussions, and participate fully.

One of our OGs operates as AnonLQ and has shared multiple open-source projects under that name. It works.

How is LQ different from an interest group? Why is there an interview?

There are plenty of interest groups for lawyers curious about AI. Having an interest in AI is easy. Being extremely fluent in AI is not. It takes passion, perseverance, experimental energy, nights and weekends, sacrificing personal time, and real creativity.

We owe it to our existing members to find people who consistently raise the bar. The interview isn’t a gatekeeping exercise — it’s how we ensure that every new member adds to the quality of discussion that makes LQ what it is. No ads, no marketing. Just lawyers telling other lawyers they found something worth joining. That’s how we grew from 5 to 80+ members across 20+ jurisdictions in 10 weeks.

What is LQ’s mission?

We are singularly focused on two things: demonstrating the power of legal quants, and building the infrastructure (i.e. the racetrack) — for them to augment their intelligence, individually and collectively.

That means finding ways to showcase their work, partnering with industry leaders to give them the best opportunities and tools, and building outlets for the world to see what this community produces. Every week we distil what 80+ practitioners are building, testing, and debating into a single digest — tools shipped, model comparisons, workflow breakdowns, and the signals that matter.

Subscribe to our weekly digest on Substack to follow along.

Against this background, our ambition is to gather the best legal quants in the world in one place and see what happens when they collaborate.

Why the bias towards lawyers? What if I’m a founder?

We believe lawyers have the biggest leverage by using AI in an individual context to become 10x practitioners. This means peeling away from prepackaged tools, getting close to the foundation models, and starting from there. We want lawyers who are further along the AI journey, who have delivered real-world impact, who are in the trenches reshaping what lawyering at the frontier of AI looks like.

We admire founders who bring value to the ecosystem in a different way. We’re happy to partner with those solving infrastructure-layer problems — version control for legal documents, data sources like indexed case law, new word/pdf processors — things that lay the track for our Legal Quants to go 10x faster.

But we draw a clear line: LegalQuants is not a legal tech vendor, and we don’t want to compete with them. Some of our members have delivered outsized results using tools built by startups — and that’s great. From our perspective, it’s about harnessing whatever tools are available. The unique skill we cultivate is the ability to use AI directly to augment one’s intelligence and work, not to build software products for mass distribution.
